French Immersion
This will be a quick synopsis of what our French Immersion program offers here at Durham Catholic. We will focus on our approach to learning French and also on how numeracy is being taught in this program.
Possible Questions:
§ What to expect in French Immersion?

§ How do I know if my child is suitable for the French Immersion program?
§ Do parents of children in French Immersion programs have to be able to speak French?

Parent Engagement
Parents play a vital role in the development and education of their children and in the success of schools.

Boys Literacy - Meeting the Needs of Boys

This interactive hands-on workshop will give participants an insight to the Full Day Kindergarten Program.

Bullying – What Parents Need to Know
Parents will be provided with an overview of how the Ministry of Education and the DCDSB define bullying. Different types of bullying situation s will be discussed and strategies and resources for students and their families will be shared.
There is a direct link between success in school and the school environment in which students learn. Students are more able and more motivated to do well and achieve their full potential in schools that have a positive school climate and in which they feel safe and supported. Parents are key partners in achieving this.

Supporting Math Instruction at Home
Our Board's Math Goal is to improve the achievement and engagement in all grades from K to 12 by learning Math through the Mathematical Processes. This hands-on session will show parents what good Math learning looks like as well as provide ideas that parents can use to help their children at home.
EQAO
§ As a parent or guardian, you care about your child’s progress in school. EQAO assessments, along with classroom assessment, can help ensure that your child is on the right track. Through sample documents and videos, this workshop will review Student and School Reports, sample student questions and the connections between various grades and subject in the primary and junior divisions.
Special Education - What's on Tap?
This workshop will be an overview of student services within DCDSB. It will also look at parents' role in the IEP.

Aboriginal Education
This workshop will highlight current and past projects developed by the Aboriginal Education Department. The focus of this session will be on student achievement and the importance of brining an Aboriginal perspective into our classrooms.
Social Media & Internet Safety
Parents will be provided with information, resources and question opportunities in the area’s of technology and social media that their children are accessing and the risks associated with these devices. Strategies and resources will be offered in order to help to keep our children safe online
Learning Disabilities: From Diagnosis to Programming Strategy
This workshop will provide information to clarify for participants the process of diagnosis a Learning Disability in a student, the nature and types of learning disabilities and the general strategies that should be helpful in support students with learning disabilities

§ Former DCDSB student speaks of his own experience with a learning disability
21st Century Technology in the Classroom
§ an interactive presentation shows parents through a hands on approach how technology levels the playing field for all students

E-learning
This workshop will provide a hands-on opportunity to explore online resources e.g. the Math tutoring website called Homework Help, the Ontario Educational Resource Bank, Math and Science Gizmos, Learn 360, and the elementary and secondary courses available for online and blended learning through Desire2Learn.
Exploring Pathways and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP
The skilled trades and technologies continue to be one of the fastest growing areas of employment. The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) provides secondary students with an opportunity to start an apprenticeship and earn high school credits towards their O.S.S.D. Students can also earn the Level 1 Training with a college or trade union while they are still in grade 12. Learn about an on=line portfolio tool which will help students explore personal interests, careers and post-secondary education programs to plan their pathway to apprenticeship, college, community living, school-to-work or university.
Living with Autism
In this session, Annie will be speaking about her personal journey coming to terms with her diagnosis, as well as the strengths and challenges that accompany it. She will also discuss ten crucial empowering tips that enabled her to become a successful student and lifelong learner.

The realities of living with a learning disability – from a student’s point of view.
Keynote Speaker Update and Information
Ruth Flynn, Ministry of Education
Ruth Flynn is the Director of the Inclusive Education Branch, Ministry of Education. She has held progressively responsible positions as (A) Director, Policy and Programs branch and Manager, Safe Schools, Ministry of Education and served as (A) Director, Central West Regional Office, as well as holding several Manager positions in the regional offices in the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Ruth also worked at Cabinet Office as a Senior Policy Advisor (Education portfolio).
Ruth has demonstrated success in working collaboratively with staff, other ministries and diverse stakeholders with the establishment of cross sector partnerships to effect positive systemic change. She has an Honors B.A.and her Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Western Ontario. She is a proud and engaged parent who has also been recognized for her community volunteer work.
Annie Kidder, People for Education
Annie is the mother of two children. A former theatre director, she initially became involved in education through the Home and School Association at her children's school.
In February 1996 she helped found People for Education, an independent organization dedicated to the ideal of a publicly funded education system that guarantees every student access to the education that meets his or her needs. People for Education promotes greater civic engagement in the public education system; conducts ongoing research into the effects of policy and funding changes on schools; and coordinates a comprehensive communications strategy focused on education issues.
People for Education publishes a bi-monthly newsletter, maintains an informative website, holds an annual conference for parents from across the province, and publishes multi-lingual information bulletins for parents.
Annie is the recipient of numerous awards for her advocacy work. She has spoken at conferences across the country and is regularly quoted in the media as an expert on education issues.
